Mumbai, formally known as Bombay is the most populous city in India. Located on a deep natural harbor, Mumbai is the country’s foremost port and has long been a thriving Centre for industry and commerce. By 1800, Bombay was fast surpassing the cities of Goa and Cochin
to become the leading port on India’s west coast. In early East India Company
days, it has been isolated from the mainland, which was ruled by Marathi, but
after their defeat by British in 1818, Bombay became a gateway to India.
Mumbai is located on islands and reclaimed land at the mouth
of the Ulhas River. Mumbai has many places to attract interested visitors as
well as tourists who want to tour around. Mumbai’s historical attraction to
immigrants from across India means that many languages are spoken on its
streets. The most common languages spoken being Hindi and Marathi, the Bambaiya
Hindi ,a colloquial blend of Hindi, Marathi and English is used commonly to
bridge language barriers.

Mumbai built by the British as a ceremonial entrance to the city. Gateway of
India was built to commemorate the visit of King George 5 and Queen Mary.
